So it's OS related in a way, in that either the OS has a bug in how it deals with the dns cache, or pidgin is using the dns cache incorrectly. I can only assume this is some stupid ploy to make a site appear more relevant on Google and other search engines. From other posters in this ticket, I can see that it is not a permanent fix, though. If you are using a proxy server, click "Connect via a proxy server" and then click "HTTP proxy" or "SOCKS proxy" to select the type of proxy server.
